This study examined the mediating effect of maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation on the relationship between childhood trauma and emotional expression among college students. A total of 422 students completed self-report questionnaires assessing childhood trauma, emotional expression, and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation. Childhood trauma was positively correlated with maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation and negatively correlated with emotional expression. It significantly increased maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation and decreased emotional expression. In the model including maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation, the direct effect of childhood trauma on emotional expression was not significant, while the indirect effect was significant, supporting a full mediation model. The results indicate that the impact of childhood trauma on emotional expression operates indirectly through cognitive processing, highlighting the importance of psychological counseling interventions that emphasize cognitive restructuring and emotion regulation.
