This study analyzed the life experiences and meanings of socially isolated youth through narrative inquiry, using the creation of online photo essays as a medium. By interpreting in-depth interview data based on youth-created photo essays that combine photography and writing, the study found that social isolation manifested as ¡®a self-narrative that must prove one¡¯s existence¡¯, ¡®a repetition of affectional longing and self-censorship¡¯ and ¡®a search for self-acceptance and potential recovery¡¯. These transformations reflected Kegan¡¯s subject–object shift, showing that online photo essays provide a safe space for emotional expression and self-reflection among youth.
Viewing social isolation not as disconnection but as a context for development and relational restoration, this study highlights the potential of creative, art-based approaches to foster social support in counseling, education, and welfare settings.
