The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effect of psychological impact in the relationship of perceived severity and coping responses of bystanders to online hate speech. To this end, survey data from 744 men and women aged 15 and older residing in South Korea who reported having been exposed to online hate speech during the past year were analyzed. The research results are as follows. First, positive correlations were found among perceived severity, coping responses, and psychological impact of online hate speech bystanders. Second, the direct effect between perceived severity and coping responses of bystanders was not significant, while only the full mediating effect through psychological impact was significant. This means that when bystanders perceive hate speech, they first experience psychological discomfort, which then leads them to engage in coping behavior.
