This study aimed to examine the mediating effects of social emotional problems and cognitive empathy in the relationship between negative parenting attitudes and smartphone dependence. A total of 2,106 participants from the 4th wave (2021) of the 2018 KCYPS(4th grade elementary school cohort) were used, and statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS WIN 26.0 and the PROCESS Macro 4.1. The findings of this study are as follows. First, adolescents who perceived higher levels of negative parenting attitudes were more likely to exhibit higher levels of smartphone dependence. Second, it was found that social emotional problems, specifically social withdrawal and depression, partially mediated the relationship between negative parenting attitudes and smartphone dependence. Lastly, cognitive empathy was also found to play a partial mediating role in the same relationship. These findings highlight the need to actively introduce emotional support programs and empathy development programs for adolescents at the levels of family, school, and local community.
