This study examined the mediating effects of frustrated interpersonal needs and interpersonal shame on the relationship between childhood emotional abuse and depression. A questionnaire consisting of the emotional abuse scale, the depression scale, the Korean interpersonal needs questionnaire, and the relational shame scale was administered online to 435 college students. The results were as follows. First, the relationship between childhood emotional abuse and depression was partially mediated by frustrated interpersonal need. Second, the relationship between childhood emotional abuse and depression was partially mediated by interpersonal shame. Third, the relationship between childhood emotional abuse and depression was sequentially mediated by frustrated interpersonal needs and interpersonal shame. This study revealed that interpersonal factors are important psychological mechanisms in the relationship between childhood emotional abuse experiences and depression, and suggested therapeutic interventions for this.
