Although power motive fundamentally impacts human social behaviors, previous studies on power motive have reported inconsistent findings. The present study aimed to investigate relationships between power motive and related behaviors. Specifically, it focused on the moderating effects of personality variables. The findings confirmed the twofold aspect of power motive by showing significant positive correlations with both prosocial behaviors and impulsive behaviors. Furthermore, agreeableness increased prosocial volunteering behaviors, whereas authoritarianism increased sexual freewheeling lifestyles. In contrast, responsibility moderated the relationships between power motive and both prosocial and impulsive behaviors such that it increased prosocial behaviors and decreased impulsive behaviors. The findings indicated that power motive influences a wide range of seemingly contradictory behaviors from prosocial to impulsive.
